◆ First EUIJ-Kyushu Annual International Conference
European Challenges for Overcoming the Crisis
Date: Saturday, 3 March 2012
Venus: Seinan Gakuin University Community Center
Speakers included Peter Bekx (Director of International Economic and Financial Relations and Global Governance in the European Commission), Francis Rawlinson (Professor, Kwansai Gakuin University), and Shugo Onoe (Professor, Seinan Gakuin University). Seiya Nakajima (Chief Economist, Itochu Corporation) and Sadayoshi Takaya (Professor, Kansai University) served as commentators. Eva Banincova (Associate Professor, Kobe Univesrsity) and Kenji Iwata (Professor, Kyushu University) were co-chairs.
The focus of this conference was to explore, from an inter-disciplinary perspective, the impact on and implications of the recent global financial credit crisis in the EU. Throughout the evolution of the EU, there has been heated debate on a “transfer union,” and the possibility of a “fiscal union” has been debated since the 70s. In addition, the existence of a single currency without a single financial system has always been debated in academic circles. With the EU economic crisis looming, the debate over what the financial system of the EU should be is once again at the forefront of discussion amongst economists, financiers, politicians, and academics the world over. A resolution is needed urgently, but what would it look like?
This question, and other related ones, was addressed during the conference. While a satisfactory resolution was far from realized, the participants – including the audience – agreed that it was an interesting, though-provoking, and informative discussion -- to be continued.
